A storm is expected to hit northern
Odisha and neighbouring West Bengal early this week. After Cyclone Tauktae,
which crossed Gujarat on May 17th, this will be the second cyclone
to slam the Indian coast in 10 days.
In the east-central Bay of Bengal, a
system is currently emerging. It was located 560 km north-northwest of Port
Blair, 590 km east-southeast of Paradip, and 690 km south-southeast of Balasore
in Odisha on Sunday morning when it became a depression (wind speed 45 to 55
km/hr gusting to 65 km/hr).
Today morning, the system will have
intensified into a cyclonic storm, according to the India Meteorological
Department (IMD). When it becomes a reality, it will be dubbed cyclone Yaas,
after an Omani tree with fragrant blossoms.
Furthermore, as the cyclone strengthens,
it will proceed north-northwestwards until making landfall over the north
Odisha – West Bengal coast, probably near Paradip and Sagar islands, in the
evening hours of May 26.
On Tuesday, North Odisha districts such
as Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, and Mayurbhanj may have moderate to heavy
rainfall, with the intensity increasing to very heavy on Wednesday. Gale gusts
of up to 80 km/h are expected to blow over the coastline of Odisha, West
Bengal, and Bangladesh starting Monday evening and continuing till May 26th
evening.
